Is encapsulation ok when I am GBS+?
I just wanted to take a quick moment to address the issue of the recent news report of the CDC, placenta encapsulation and Group B Strep. If you haven’t seen this news report yet, take a moment to google and you will find it. Understandably, this has health care professionals and parents concerned. I want to ease your concerns that a placenta can still be encapsulated and consumed, even if you are positive for GBS. When preparing capsules, the placenta is first steamed and then it is dehydrated for 18+ hours at 165*F, which has been shown to be sufficient in killing dangerous bacteria, including GBS. It is suspected that the family in Portland, OR, did not prepare their placenta at temperatures high enough to kill the strep bacteria and possibly passed on infection from their capsules to the baby. It still is not known how the baby contracted GBS as it was not being passed through the mother's milk after ingesting her capsules.
I want clients to make an educated and informed choice when it comes to placenta encapsulation. I would encourage you to read the blog post below from American Placenta Preparation Arts and possibly take a copy of it to your health care provider and share it with them. There may be healthcare professionals advising you against encapsulation based on this one isolated case. You may need to advocate for your placenta if you are indeed GBS+. 642 clients at the time of the CDC statement, many of whom have been GBS+, and I have never had this issue.
